STYFL Announces Changes, Eagles Future Hangs in the Balance

April 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Well folks, there are going to be some changes next year that could spell the end of the STYFL Eagles football club as we knew it. According to STYFL.com, the changes will help the league, “manage league operations more effectively and provide more evenly matched competition for all of our players”. So, how are things going to change…

Well first, the STYFL is going to be reorganized into a smaller number of “clubs”. Each club will have a team represented in each of the previous age groups and each team will basically have a varsity squad and a JV squad based on “skill level”. So, the size of each club will expand as will the number of coaches (more on that later). Also, each club will have a general manager that oversees all the teams within the club.

The kids will all practice together during the week and on game day, the varsity and JV squads will play separate games. I don’t know about you, but I can see a huge heaping pile of drama when it comes down to who makes varsity. It will really place a lot of pressure on the coaching staffs. It’s also not entirely clear whether or not the games will be on the same days/locations. I would certainly hope that the kids would be able to see their teammates play each week.

So, here’s the bummer in all of this. It looks like Gene and presumably the rest of the coaching staff aren’t too pleased with the changes and as a result aren’t going to be coaching next season. This would be tragic in my opinion as the Eagles were one of the best run youth football teams I have ever seen. Check that… they were the best run youth football program I ever saw at that age. I played football for 12 years and I can honestly say that the boys were getting high school level training. It would be a real bummer if they don’t come back. Stay tuned…

I agree and would be willing to help out with the defense if the coaches deem acceptable. I have a lot of experience playing football on the defensive side.
